In a post to Reddit, the shopper shared how they scored big at the record shop.
They explained how they found a Second State Butcher Cover of The Beatles’ Yesterday and Today album in very good condition for $13.
“I couldn’t believe it so I took it straight to another record store to authenticate. They told me it was worth $1000-1200 in its condition,” they wrote.
The album’s original release with the “Butcher cover” is one of the most widely recognized and valuable albums in the world, according to Rare Records.
However, its popularity is not due to the musical content, but rather the album’s cover.
Released in June 1966, the original cover featured the Beatles wearing butcher smocks as well as raw meat and dismembered plastic doll parts.
Reviewers who received copies of the album in advance did not take well to the cover, forcing Capitol Records to replace the album’s cover art with something more conservative.
THREE STATES OF THE BUTCHER COVER
The Butcher cover comes in three states.
A First State issue of the Yesterday and Today album features the original cover with the Beatles dressed as butchers.
This is the rarest and most valuable of the three states.
The shopper found a Second State issue, which is an original butcher cover with a new cover design pasted over it.
The replacement cover featured the Beatles sitting around a steamer trunk.
Although Second State covers are less valuable than First State issues, they can still be worth hundreds to over a thousand dollars based on condition and other factors.
A Third State issue consists of a Second State issue with the trunk cover removed.
These are the least valuable of the three covers but still hold significant interest among collectors.
Valuable Items
People have unkowingly stumbled upon valauble items, later shocked to realize their true value.
Here are several examples of items worth more than expected:
A grandmother’s baseball bat worth $30,000
A silver coin found on a farm worth $30,000
A hand-me-down ring worth $595,000
An antique lighter worth $4,000
A model bridge worth $25,000
Their value depends on how the trunk cover’s removal is executed.
For example, poorly peeled Third State covers can sell for 90% less than professionally peeled Third State covers.
Many others have stumbled upon valuable items.
One woman took an old rug her neighbor threw in the trash and learned the design was highly sought after – she sold it for $150,000.
Another person got paid in alcohol – decades later his family discovered one of the vintage drinks was worth $145,000.
