Fire Destroys Barn, Artifacts At Steppingstone Farm Museum: Official
HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — Organizers with Steppingstone Farm Museum are asking that no one access their property by any means after the museum's display barn caught on fire Sunday. Countless artifacts were lost in the blaze.The fire broke out just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the farm museum's storage barn located at 461 Quaker Bottom Road. It was discovered by an employee on the lower level of the inside of the barn. The property is owned by the state.Around 50 firefighters with the Level Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze for around an hour until they gained control. No one was injured and no animals were harmed, according to officials.The state fire marshal's office is investigating the blaze. Loss has been estimated at around $200,000, which excludes the historic artifacts. The Steppingstone Farm Museum is a non-profit educational and cultural institution found along the Susquehanna River, northwest of Havre de Grace, Maryland, whose mission is to preserve and interpret the rural heritage of Harford County. The museum was founded by Bel Air native, J. Edmund Bull, vice president of the First National City Bank of New York. After retiring in 1957, Bull returned to Maryland and purchased a farm situated between Dublin and Whiteford, according to Steppingstone Farm Museum. The museum is housed in 23 building across 23 acres. Steppingstone Farm Museum is operated by volunteers and has hosted tens of thousands of visitors to date.The museum's leaders also invited supporters to make a donation to help as they look to the future.
