NC State climbs into the top tier of Jamar Browder’s recruitment
NC State offered Jamar Browder Jan. 26, but he did not hear much from the staff afterwards. The Wolfpack caught his interest earlier this year so, when the coaches started to reach out more this spring, he was ready to strongly consider the program.
The 6-5, 200-pound wide receiver, recruited to play the versatile flex-y slot position in the program’s offense, locked in a June 7-9 official visit. NC State stopped by his school in early-May and ramped up its interest in the Lake Worth (Fla.) Santaluces Community High star.
He knew his college interest would pick up this spring once coaches saw him play in person, and that’s exactly what happened with the Wolfpack. Their relationship took a noticeable step forward.
“It’s gotten way better,” Browder said. “When I first got [the offer], communication was so-so.”
Browder and the Wolfpack talk regularly these days. Offensive quality control coach Gavin Locklear is his primary recruiter. Before the NC State interest picked up, he did not think much about the program.
Now, he hears the people around him talking about how the university is a good school in a good area. He likes that NC State is located in a city instead of the middle of nowhere.
“My interest is really high,” Browder said. “I’ve heard good things [about] them from numerous people, like they’ll just happen to talk about NC State.”
The opportunity to play Power Four football and compete on a significant stage appeals to the wide receiver. That’s part of the reason why he set his official visit. He also has summer trips scheduled to Indiana and Georgia Tech.
Throughout his recruitment, schools have shown inconsistent interest. Browder took note of that.
“If one school is showing interest and then they stop, I’ll take it as that, and then I’ll see them when I get to college and show them what’s up,” Browder said.
He holds offers from Louisville, Syracuse and West Virginia amongst others.
Browder is building a solid connection with Locklear, a former Wolfpack wide receiver who is young enough that their conversations have a pretty casual feel to them, which the class of 2025 prospect appreciates. The quality control coach was one of three NC State assistants to visit Santaluces High this year.
He’s teammates with three-star cornerback Caden Gordon, another priority prospect for the Pack. They are visiting Georgia Tech together, and it sounds like they are considering teaming up at the college level as well. The Pack remains a contender for both of them.
“We’re trying to make it a thing where we come in a package deal…I had to convince him to come up with me and, according to him, he’s going to come up with me when I go up,” Browder said.
Going into his NC State official visit, Browder said he sees no “red flags” around the program. Once he arrives on campus, the rising senior wants to see if there is a path to playing time as a freshman, while also learning about the Wolfpack’s academics.
The dorm situation will also be important to him.
“I’ve got to know how it is where I lay my head at,” Browder said.
NC State established itself near the top of his recruitment thanks to the staff’s increased communication.
“I don’t want to say they jumped up to number one, but it’s either one or two,” Browder said.
The receiver prospect originally planned on making a spring commitment but ended up pushing that back so he could take official visits. He does not plan on prolonging his decision very far into the summer.
“Before July starts, that’s when I want to be committed to a school,” Browder said.
Browder plans on wrapping up his decision-making process by the end of June, setting the Wolfpack up with a huge opportunity on his trip to Raleigh.
