“We talked about a fifth movie”: Pierce Brosnan’s $431M Critical Disaster May be Why They Didn’t Let Him Return for Another James Bond Movie
The role of James Bond has played an instrumental part in Pierce Brosnan’s career. Despite succeeding some of the greatest Bond actors like the late Sean Connery and Roger Moore, Bosnan made a name as the character. However, his films could not attract the same amount of love as they had major problems and were widely criticized by fans and critics.

Pierce Brosnan started on a good note when he was introduced as the British Secret Service Agent in 1995’s GoldenEye. He gave an incredible performance and the audience liked this new version of 007. But the following three films failed to maintain the first film’s quality.
Pierce Brosnan played James Bond in four films. If the Dante’s Peak actor is to be believed, then he wanted to return for a fifth film before he was replaced by Daniel Craig for a franchise reboot.
Why did the studio not continue Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond film series?

It must be noted that Pierce Brosnan was not a bad James Bond actor but the problems lay in the scripts, weird gimmicks, and over-emphasis on the use of CGI scenes. All of these factors never let Brosnan attract critical acclaim for his 007 films following GoldenEye.

According to Screen Rant, Brosnan admitted that he “wanted Bond to get a little more gritty and real and down and dirty” but the scripts always came with “the same outlandish scenarios”.
In another interview with Kurier (via ContactMusic), the Mamma Mia! actor admitted that he also wanted to return for a fifth James Bond flick before the studio took the franchise in another track.
It’s totally changed since Daniel Craig is playing it. They wanted to modernise Bond. I didn’t stop voluntarily. We talked about a fifth movie and then came the call that I am out. Total change of direction. That was very hard.
It was not an impossible job as Pierce Brosnan’s last 007 films were successful at the box office. The Numbers state that Die Another Day earned $431.9 million worldwide. But it looks like the makers took the low ratings of the 2002 Bond flick into consideration and decided to revamp the franchise with Daniel Craig’s 007.
How are the Daniel Craig James Bond flicks different from Pierce Brosnan’s?

Every actor who played the British tuxedo-clad spy created by Ian Fleming had his different take on the character. As the first iteration of Bond, the late Sean Connery left a lasting impact on the fans. Following him, many fans also liked Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan’s versions.
When it was first announced that Daniel Craig would succeed Brosnan as the next Bond, it cannot be denied that many fans were unhappy. The fans felt that the Knives Out actor did not match the ideal descriptions of the spy. Surprisingly, Craig shut down his haters hard when Casino Royale was released in 2006.

The critics and the fans loved how the actor re-invented the character and how Eon took a different take on the story. It was more grounded, gritty, and focused on intense action. Unlike the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies’ CGI overuse and weak storyline, this new version presented more impressive action sequences and a brilliant plot.
Daniel Craig went on to play the character for four more films- Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time To Die. Here we got another major change from the previous James Bond flicks as Craig’s movies were connected and acted as a complete saga instead of standalone ventures.
With Craig’s departure from the role, the studio is expected to soon make an announcement. In 2022, The Sun reported that Aaron Taylor-Johnson may be the next in line to play the spy. We are yet to get any official updates from the studio.
