Obituary: Donald Doolittle, 89, Of Wallingford
WALLINGFORD, CT — (From B.C. Bailey Funeral Home): Donald Doolittle, 89, departed this life on May 11, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late MaryEllen (O'Connor) Doolittle. Donald was born in New Haven, CT on January 2, 1935, a son to the late Russell & Mary K. (Bohan) Doolittle.Donald attended Holy Trinity and was a member of the 1949 graduating class and went on to graduate from St. Mary's in New Haven in 1953. He was a long-time swim coach for the boys and girls swim team at Lyman Hall High School and a well-respected mentor.Donald proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War era.For many years he worked as an inspector for the Bureau of Boilers for the State of CT, a career which he enjoyed tremendously.Donald was the last of the original "Good Guys." He was an extremely giving man and dedicated his life to always helping others. He served at many local soup kitchens and was a Eucharistic Minister for his church.Donald was a devout family man and carried his last name with extreme pride as he was the eleventh-generation ancestor of Abraham Doolittle, the founder of Wallingford, CT.Over the years the name Doolittle became well known and respected in the community. 'The Doolittle Motto' as it became known has helped to positively shape the wonderful place Wallingford is today and reads "Do a little bit more, a little bit better".Donald is survived by his two sons, David Doolittle (Rose) of Middletown and Dennis Doolittle (Sue) of Griswold as well as his grandchildren, Emily Crespo (Bill), Cassidy Doolittle (Logan), Alison Doolittle (Jordan), Rider Doolittle (Liz), and Adam Doolittle (Abby). He also leaves behind his great grandson, Robert Crespo as well as his sister, Catherine Gunther (Kevin). In addition to his wife and parents, Donald is predeceased by his brother Russell Doolittle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 20, 2024, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection, 115 Pond Hill Rd., Wallingford. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. John's Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donald's name to a local soup kitchen or food bank (501C3 entities preferably).The B.C.
