A big quarterback decision was made this week by Moore, turning to Alex Orji after three games. The move instantly paid off in the first half as the Michigan offense seemed to have life, mainly on the ground.
The Wolverines used their run game to take down USC, scoring on a 4th and Goal with under a minute remaining. Moore needed a big win and got one to start Big Ten play.
2. Tennessee HC Josh Heupel
Herbstreit covered the game in Norman and saw Tennessee take down Oklahoma in more than impressive fashion. Heupel spent all week saying the return was not about him but you could tell his players had a little extra juice for their head coach.
With the victory, Tennessee has made a big-time statement with a few tough tests still on the way. Oklahoma might wind up being the one that means the most to Heupel during the regular season, though.
3. Illinois HC Bret Bielema
A little Friday nice special from Illinois, going on the road and taking down Nebraska in an upset. If there was ever a sleeper to contend in the Big Ten, it might be the Fighting Illini.
Saturday will not be any easier task, heading back on the road to face off against Penn State. If Illinois winds up winners, Bielema likely finds himself back on Herbstreit’s list next Monday.
4. BYU HC Kalani Sitake

Most people may have been asleep but BYU was able to open its Big 12 schedule with a win against a ranked Kansas State team. A three-point game around halftime, the Cougars were up by over 20 points in a blink of an eye.
Sitake has been one of the more consistent head coaches in college football while with BYU, entering his ninth season with the program. Now, he can build off the Kansas State win in a big way.
5. Florida State DC Adam Fuller
Defense has far been the issue for Florida State this season. Even so, a Cal offense with momentum came to Tallahassee and only put nine points on the board.
Sometimes, you just need your unit to bend and not break. That’s what Fuller got with three field goals and no touchdowns allowed. Florida State has their first win of the 2024 season on the board.
6. SMU HC Rhett Lashlee
Lashlee wound up being the only head coach remaining on the sidelines by the time the clock hit zero in Dallas on Sunday. TCU‘s Sonny Dykes was ejected early in the third quarter and did not see his team finish what turned into an Iron Skillet loss.
This is one Lashlee desperately wanted to win for SMU with the rivalry going away for some time. Job accomplished and then some, making a statement as the Mustangs head into ACC play.
7. Utah DC Morgan Scalley
Whenever you can keep Ollie Gordon under 50 rushing yards, you are bound to wind up on Herbstreit’s top coaches list. Scalley and Utah got the job done against Oklahoma State to take firm control early in the Big 12 race.
Even when the Cowboys dropped back to pass, there was not much success. Under 300 yards allowed for Utah with two forced turnovers. Scalley will take those stats every day of the week.
