Free Netflix rival launches on Amazon Fire TV and Roku with 170 channels – it’s hidden in an app you’d normally pay for
A NETFLIX competitor has launched a free streaming tier on Amazon Fire TV and Roku – offering access to 170 channels.
The ad-supported service is concealed within an app that viewers would usually pay for.

The access to free ad-supported channels is being offered via Fubo, a live TV streaming service
But there are a couple of catches to be aware of.
Fubo Free is only available to select former Fubo subscribers who have expired from a paying subscription or free trial.
Plus, you won’t have free access to local channels and regional sports networks.
“If you’re a former Fubo subscriber, you can still watch over 170 free ad-supported channels of great live and on-demand content – without a paid subscription with Fubo Free,” the service revealed last Friday.
Fubo Free is available to select former Fubo subscribers.

“Fubo Free is available to select former Fubo subscribers who have expired from a paying subscription or free trial.
“If you cancel your free trial subscription, it will automatically expire at the time of cancellation.
“If you cancel a paid subscription, it will expire at the end of your current billing period.”
And the free service is easy to access.
Once your subscription expires, you simply log in to your Fubo account at fubo.tv with your previous credentials – eg email and password.
Then, you can either reactivate your previous subscription, or just select Go to free content instead, to check out Fubo Free.
For those who can’t see this option, Fubo advised that, initially, the Fubo Free experience will only be available to select former Fubo subscribers.
MOVIES
And for those who choose to stick with the service and continue subscribing, you will also have free access to 170 channels.
“The channels and programming included with Fubo Free are already a part of your Fubo subscription,” it added.
So what exactly is included with Fubo Free?
“In addition to 170+ free channels, Fubo Free will… have home, guide, sports, my stuff, shows, and movies screens,” according to the service.
“Local channels and regional sports networks are only available with a paid Fubo subscription.”
You can set and reorder favorite channels, search for specific channels, or filter by genre in the guide.

Series and movies can be added to your watchlist – with access via my stuff.
Viewers can find games to watch, or search available leagues and teams to see live, along with upcoming, or previously-aired games on the sports screen.
Fubo recommended finding free programming on its shows and movies screens to watch, and filter by genre to narrow searches.
RECORDING ISSUES
But, you can’t record shows on Fubo Free.
“You may see a recordings option on your my stuff page in Fubo Free,” it said.
“However, you’ll need to reactivate your paid Fubo subscription in order to use cloud DVR.”
Cloud DVR recordings from a previously paid subscription won’t be available on Fubo Free.
“When canceling your paid subscription, you’ll have had access to your recordings until your subscription expired,” said Fubo.
“Once your subscription expired, your recordings were automatically deleted.”
For those wishing to renew their paid subscription, Fubo recommended that the first step is to log in to their Fubo Free account at fubo.tv.
Then click the settings cog at the top of the screen, and select my account.
Next, select reactivate your subscription, and follow the instructions to renew it.
QUIET LAUNCH
The free streaming service was quietly launched, according to Cord Cutters News.
“Recently, Fubo has slowly been adding free content to its lineup of channels. Now, Fubo offers over 170 free ad-supported channels,” the website added.
“Unlike Sling TV and Philo, two live TV streaming services with a free ad-supported plan, Fubo does not offer a DVR.”
News of the service has attracted some negative responses, with some potential users commenting on their frustration when trying to access the free service.
“Free to only previous customers? That’s dumb,” said one person.
“So all the streaming services are morphing into broadcast channels and showing the same garbage that was aired 20-30 years ago,” wrote another.
But the Fubo app itself has attracted positive reviews on Amazon, with some claiming it’s an enjoyable streaming service with better live streaming quality than Hulu.
“We love the channel selection,” posted one subscriber on Amazon.
