Microsoft Expands Data Infrastructure Footprint with Massive Land Purchases in El Mirage, Arizona, and Granger, Indiana
Microsoft's strategic data center expansion continues to unfold with substantial land acquisitions in El Mirage, Arizona, and Granger, Indiana, signaling a significant increase in the tech giant's physical footprint and potential job creation. The company purchased roughly 283 acres in El Mirage for $258 million, as reported by ABC15. The site near Northern Parkway and Dysart Road is an addition to the 150 acres already held by Microsoft in the area.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has also secured a more extensive tract of 930 acres in Granger, Indiana, for $77.5 million from St. Joe Farm. This recent development, as covered by Inside Indiana Business, will house a new data center for the company near the intersection of Currant and Cleveland roads. Officials are actively working on utility provision and site planning to propel this project forward.
Both sites represent Microsoft's growing commitment to establishing robust data infrastructure across regions identified for industrial development. In El Mirage, this purchase adds to the existing data center at the LogistiCenter at Copperwing industrial complex, developed by Nevada-based Dermody Properties, and a third 245,000-square-foot data center facility has been approved by the local council. In Granger, following the county council's decision to rezone the farmland for industrial use, Microsoft's land purchase is set to generate economic momentum. Bill Schalliol, director of economic development for St. Joseph County, emphasized the need for multi-faceted community involvement and acknowledged, "We always work to get local companies and local labor forces involved on these projects as they evolve."
This expansion is part of a broader trend in data center investments by major tech companies in the region. "The recent rezoning allows the community to use the corridor as it was once envisioned for development and transportation purposes," Schalliol told Inside Indiana Business. Beyond the potential for a surge in local property values, there's an anticipation of job creation, although specifics on the number of jobs and the timeline for the projects' completion remain undefined. Concerns raised by residents about the impact on the environment and agricultural land persist, with elected officials such as Councilor Amy Drake advocating for a balance between development and community interests.
