VIDEO: SF Neighborhood Plagued by Horde of Late Night Waymos Honking & Flashing Lights
Residents of a San Francisco neighborhood have been experiencing disrupted sleep due to a cacophony of honking from Waymo's driverless cars. According to a report by NBC Bay Area, multiple incidents have occurred where the autonomous vehicles, parked in a lot near condominiums, began honking erratically at each other throughout the night.
Randol White, whose condo overlooks the lot, was the first to notice the noise that startled him awake around 4 a.m. weeks ago. "I was like, where is that coming from? And I looked down, and I was like, I think it's coming from the Waymo cars," White told ABC7 News. However, this turned out to be just the beginning, as the honking has continued since, desperately disturbing residents' sleep randomly.
Neighbors in San Francisco’s SOMA neighborhood say Waymo driverless cars in a nearby lot are keeping them up at night with repeated honking at 4:00 am. The cars appear to trigger honking from each other as they move around the lothttps://t.co/iBGgdoZApz @nbcbayarea pic.twitter.com/Pnx9zNInYc

Russell Pofsky, another local, mirrored White's grievances via ABC7 News. "Over the past two weeks I've been woken up more times overnight than I have combined over 20 years," Pofsky explained in an interview with NBC Bay Area. He described the toll on his well-being, saying, "I could not be more cranky today for a Monday after these past two weeks. It's really at a high level. It's just really, really... it's tough. It affects the way you feel".
The issue has prompted residents to reach out to Waymo for a solution. Waymo acknowledged the problem, stating, “We are aware that in some scenarios our vehicles may briefly honk while navigating our parking lots. We have identified the cause and are in the process of implementing a fix", in a statement by ABC7 News. Despite the challenges faced, White maintains his support for the autonomous vehicle company as a regular user, saying, "And so I was all about it until the honking started. And all I really want is resolution," White told ABC7 News.
