Fallout 4 DLC explained: Full list and best ones to play
Shortly after the launch of Fallout 4, Bethesda released several sizeable pieces of DLC to expand the wasteland and, in some cases, introduce new storylines altogether.
Now a good few years down the line, and in the wake of the Fallout TV show, many people are now returning to the world of Fallout 4 to experience these new adventures for themselves.
As not everything in the downloadable content needs to be played in chronological order, it’s deciding where to start that’s tricky.
The good news is that we’ve waded through everything that the Fallout 4 DLC has to offer, so you know what’s worth your time and what’s not.

Nuka-World in Fallout 4. Bethesda
Fallout 4’s expansion packs were released gradually between March to August 2016 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. These were then included in the Fallout 4: Game of the Year edition and or purchased separately via the Fallout 4 Season Pass.
Here is a full list of all the DLC in release date order:
Automatron
Wasteland Workshop
Far Harbour
Contraptions Workshop
Vault-Tec Workshop
Nuka-World
Texture Pack
Since the next-gen launch of Fallout 4, all of the DLC can now be played on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S along with the base game.
Which Fallout 4 DLC are best to play?
But where to begin? Each piece of DLC varies and different players will have a preference, but here are the three we would recommend trying out.
Far Harbor
Far Harbor DLC. Bethesda
Bethesda released Far Harbor in May 2016, quickly going on to become one of the most popular pieces of DLC for the game. It focuses on the search for a young woman and a colony of synths on Mount Desert Island on behalf of Valentine’s Detective Agency. Its complex plot and new location made this a superb addition. Also, more Nick Valentine is never a bad thing.
Vault-Tec Workshop
Fallout 4 Vault-Tec Workshop DLC. Bethesda
Who doesn’t want to build their own vault in a Fallout game? Taking advantage of the Settlement mechanic that the fourth edition introduced, players can design a vault complete with retro-futuristic furniture and art, putting a personal spin on one of gaming’s most iconic locations.
Automatron
Automatron in Fallout 4. Bethesda
Another narrative-driven expansion, Automatron was Fallout 4’s first DLC and it focuses on a bunch of killer robots that have been unleashed into the world by the odd Mechanist. Aside from being action-heavy as you battle through hordes of mechanical mayhem, Automatron also allowed players to make their own custom robot companions by scavenging parts throughout the wasteland.
