NOAA Releases Summer Weather Outlook For MD, U.S.
MARYLAND — Maryland's summer forecast is leaning toward above-normal temperatures this year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's newly released seasonal outlook. The forecasters say conditions support elevated odds for above-normal temperatures for the mid-Atlantic, southern Plains, Gulf Coast, and Southeast, a prediction that earlier seasonal forecasts have also shared.Precipitation is also likely to be above-normal each month across the Ohio Valley to the mid-Atlantic states, and south through the Carolinas, Georgia and as far south as the Tampa Bay area in Florida. Some weather forecasters have called for an "explosive" hurricane season in the Atlantic, which could affect Maryland. NOAA will issue its outlook for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season on Thursday, May 23, and offer guidance on how the public can prepare for hurricane season, which officially begins on June 1.How steamy it will feel outside is determined by the heat index, which is calculated with the air temperature and humidity. A heat index calculator is available at noaa.gov.The Maryland Department of Health said signs of heat exhaustion include extreme thirst, fatigue, weakness, clammy skin, nausea or vomiting and rapid breathing.Heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness and occurs when body temperature rises to as much as 106 degrees or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided. Symptoms of heat stroke include red, hot, and dry skin, no sweating, and a rapid, weak pulse. Here are some tips to prepare for severe heat:Check that your home's cooling system is working properly.Make sure your home is well insulated and that you have weather stripping around your doors and window sills to keep the cool air inside.Install window air conditioners snugly; insulate if necessary.Check air-conditioning ducts for proper insulation.Install temporary window reflectors (for use between windows and drapes), such as aluminum foil-covered cardboard, to reflect heat back outside.Keep windows covered with shades, drapes, or temporary reflectors. Here are some tips for coping with extreme heat:When the heat index is high, stay indoors as much as possible.Move to the lower floors of your building.Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day, before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.Wear light-weight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.Drink plenty of water before starting any outdoor activity.During outdoor activities, take frequent breaks and drink water or other fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine.NEVER leave infants, pets, children, or the elderly inside a parked car.Dress infants and children in cool, loose-fitting clothing and shade their faces with a hat or umbrella.Fans will not prevent a heat-related illness. Take a cool shower or bath or move to a room with air conditioning.Check on adults you know who are at risk for heat-related illness at least twice a day.Constantly monitor children for signs of heat-related illnesses.Maryland has a 40 to 50 percent chance of seeing "above-normal" precipitation this summer. Here's the National Weather Service forecast for the Baltimore area for the next seven days:Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74.
