Friday The 13th’s Jason Voorhees to butcher Agent Smith in MultiVersus relaunch
MultiVersus might be a killer time (Warner Bros. Games)
Jason Voorhees and The Matrix’s Agent Smith have been added to MultiVersus, in what is one of the weirdest line-ups in gaming history.
If you thought the combination of Arya Stark, Bugs Bunny, and LeBron James was already weird in MultiVersus, Warner Bros. has taken its peculiar line-up of fighters to a new extreme.
MultiVersus was released in beta form in July 2022 and is essentially a clone of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series, albeit with Warner Bros. characters like Batman, Superman, Bugs Bunny, and Steven Universe. After almost a year, the beta was taken down in June 2023, with a full launch now planned for May 28.
Ahead of the platform fighter’s return, developer Player First Games has released a trailer to showcase the revamped roster – with some unexpected faces added to the mix.
The strangest addition is fictional serial killer Jason Voorhees, who is best known for butchering teenagers in the Friday The 13th films. He’s been given a cuddlier aesthetic in line with the general MultiVersus tone, but it’s still odd to see a masked killer rub shoulders with Marvin The Martian.
The other new character is Agent Smith from The Matrix, who will be added to the roster post-launch. These two join previously announced new characters The Joker and Banana Guard from Adventure Time, who will be available at launch.
These all join the original roster, which includes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny, Taz, Marvin The Martian, Finn and Jake from Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, Velma and Shaggy from Scooby Doo, Harley Quinn, Tom & Jerry, Arya Stark from Game Of Thrones, The Iron Giant, Black Adam, Gizmo and Stripe from Gremlins, LeBron James from Space Jam, Steven Universe and Garnet from Steven Universe, and original character Reindog.
Following the trailer, some fans have already spotted teases for what might be upcoming characters. As the WB tower is cracked open, Samurai Jack’s sword, Aquaman’s trident, a toy from the Powerpuff Girls, and what looks like a broom (which could be either Harry Potter or Wicked related) can be seen falling from a confetti shower.

The trailer itself, which is pretty impressive in its detail, also features other background nods to other Warner Bros. properties. As encapsulated in a thread on Reddit, these range from DC’s Raven and Robin, Dexter’s glasses from Dexter’s Laboratory, Green Lantern, Marceline’s guitar from Adventure Time, Scooby Doo’s Scooby Snacks, Daffy Duck, and the Animaniacs.
While it’s likely some of these might just be playful nods, it’s reasonable to assume others have been planted as hints towards DLC characters. The Powerpuff Girls, for example, have even been hinted at in a previous trailer for The Joker.
There’s no sign of A Clockwork Orange yet though, which, incredibly, was in Space Jam 2, which featured a similar mash-up of corporate IP.

Along with new characters, MultiVersus will run on Unreal Engine 5 when it returns later this month. It will also include a new PvE mode and revamped combat mechanics.
The biggest question is whether the free-to-play fighter will maintain its popularity this time around. The beta for MultiVersus was very popular when it initially launched, but numbers on Steam took a 99% drop six months later.
