Woodland Hills Man Sentenced to Over 50 Years for Serial Assaults in Ventura County
A Woodland Hills man, Edgar Rodriguez Ruelas, was sentenced to 32 years to life plus an additional 21 years in state prison, after a jury found him guilty of multiple felony counts involving a series of assaults on women, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office. Ruelas, 42, committed his crimes in Ventura County, stalking women in their homes or while they were hiking alone on trails between June 2017 and March 2020.
Details from the DA's office reveal Ruelas' first charged offense occurred when he assaulted a 25-year-old woman after entering her apartment through an unlocked door; and the assaults persisted with similar incidents, including one where a victim fought back with a ukulele, on both trails and residential areas, and Ruelas was caught several times on surveillance footage, including one instance leading to a pursuit that provided crucial evidence in his trial, Hoodline reported.
The jury convicted Ruelas on five felony counts, finding that he represented a danger to society, he was linked to the criminal acts by DNA evidence found at multiple crime scenes except for one where his DNA wasn't discovered, but corroborative testimony and video evidence were sufficient for his conviction. Senior Deputy District Attorney Brent Nibecker, assigned to cold case sexual assaults, commended the "brave women who faced Ruelas in court," adding that "he hopefully never be free to attack again," in his hopes that the life sentence delivers the justice the victims deserve, as stated in a release from the Ventura County DA's office.
