Fall On Mount Beacon Seriously Injures Child On School Field Trip
BEACON, NY — A child is recovering after a school field trip went horribly wrong. On Thursday, shortly after 1 p.m., the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps., along with the City of Beacon Medic 1 Ambulnz By DocGo - Hudson Valley, Catskill & Capital Regions, was dispatched to the Mount Beacon Trail head after reports of a child who had fallen and was hurt while on a school field trip.The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response 911 Center initially reported that school personnel had administered first aid and were attempting to help the injured child down the mountain. Later, dispatchers reported that the child was no longer able to walk due to the severity of the leg injury. This more troubling update triggered an urgent response from emergency services.Due to the location of the injured child and the difficult mountain terrain, Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps' specialized Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) was deployed to the mountain head. Rescuers were able to navigate the mountain terrain to reach within 100 yards of the injured child's location.After an assessment of the child's condition, crews on the mountain decided to request an air medical helicopter. With LifeNet of New York Air 2 able to land within 15 minutes, the Beacon Professional Firefighters IAFF L-3490 established a landing zone in Memorial Park, with assistance from the City of Beacon Police Department.Crews on the mountain stabilized and packaged the patient, with help from school staff and New York State Park Police Public Safety Rangers. The injured student was carried to the UTV and then carefully brought down from the mountain. The child was then moved into a waiting ambulance with further stabilization provided with assistance from City of Beacon Medic 1.
