Trevor Rogers’ quality six-inning start sparks Tides to victory in Durham

Trevor Rogers has regained his good form, helping the Norfolk Tides win 2-1 Thursday night at Durham before 8,075.
The Bulls still lead the six-game series 2-1. It will continue Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Rogers, a former MLB All-Star whom Baltimore acquired at the trade deadline from Miami in a deal that sent Tides mainstay Connor Norby to the Marlins, posted an 0-2 record and 7.11 earned-run average in four starts with the Orioles in August, prompting a demotion to the Tides (63-78, 27-39 in the International League’s second half).
The 26-year-old occasionally has been hit hard with Norfolk, but Thursday he pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out seven on 92 pitches.
The effort, his third consecutive “quality start,” improved his earned-run average to 5.87 and was his first victory representing the Baltimore organization in eight starts.
Durham starter Joe Rock (6-8) also was solid in the clash of left-handers, matching Rogers for most of the night.
In the Norfolk seventh, though, J.D. Davis walked and Forrest Wall reached on an infield to single to third. One out later, Hudson Haskin lined a double to left that brought home both runners.
Jacob Webb, who’s on a rehabilitation assignment from the Orioles, and fellow Norfolk relievers Brooks Kriske and Levi Stoudt completed the victory. That gave Stoudt his first Triple-A save.
Curtis Mead’s homer to left-center off Kriske in the eighth provided the run for the Bulls (70-71, 34-32).
